About the Tour to Red Rock and Mt. Charleston
Every tour starts with a drive out of Las Vegas and through the picturesque desert surroundings, after picking you up at your hotel or rental. Along the drive, you’ll get to know your guide and hear some history about the city of Las Vegas as you drive through it, nearby attractions such as the Hoover Dam, and the rich history of the native tribes, historical figures, and various cultures of the area. As you wind through the quintessential Nevada landscape, you’ll learn about some of the incredible geological formations in the area, which you may see on a hike, as well as other modern-day interests, such as area connections to both the Mob and famed, eccentric aviator Howard Hughes.
This tour is designed to highlight the best of the surrounding Las Vegas area (5-6 hours). Typically, a tour of this length can include one of the main locations due to the driving distance from Sin City. For the adventurous, head to Red Rock with hiking suitable for all ages – taking you through Lost Canyon, where you can see ancient pictographs, lessons of desert life, towering views, and a hidden seasonal waterfall (December-April). Another hiking option is Calico Tanks, which will lead you to a hidden water pocket and a spectacular view of Las Vegas. If you’re looking for something a little more low-key, the Springs Preserve and Botanical Gardens is for you! Stops can include the Origen Museum galleries, the green buildings of the Desert Living Center, the lush Botanical Garden (you’ll be amazed at the incredible desert landscaping), and prehistoric archaeological sites. Or, if you’ve got more time, head to Mt. Charleston – about 45 minutes away – for hiking and natural splendor galore!
This tour (7-10 hours) offers you the opportunity to really explore the Nevada desert. You’ll be able to take some longer hikes, visit multiple locations (your choice of 2 or all 3!), or spend time in Las Vegas at the beginning or end of your tour. Mt. Charleston offers over 60 miles of trails which can bring you to the ever-popular Mary Jane Falls, a seasonal waterfall with a small cave, Bristlecone Trail, which is particularly beautiful in autumn, or Stanley B Springs, which offers great views of Mummy Mountain and Cockscomb Ridge, while passing abandoned mines. If you prefer to stay in the Red Rock area, Ice Box Canyon is for the toughest of the tough, taking you through a cool, shady box canyon with seasonal waterfalls (December-April) after scrambling on boulders and loose rocks in the heart of Red Rock Canyon. You’ll also have time to grab a meal at a local restaurant or explore anything else you’re interested in. Your wish is our command!
Most hikes in the Red Rock and Mt. Charleston areas are easy to moderately difficult and can be done with children. We strongly advise bringing 2-3 liters of water per hike. Your guide will be monitoring the heat and weather conditions. We also encourage you to be very conscious of the desert heat and your group members. We strongly recommend sunscreen, hats, and extra water if taking this tour from April-September.
